Los Guajares two years after the fire

Los Guajares two years after the fire

Although there is still soil loss, there is also a good regeneration (average) Some areas have more vegetation than others. There is still an area where nothing is growing, perhaps due to the soil being washed away by the sporadic rains.
The “resprouting” species (esparto grass, mastic, junipers, kermes oaks…) are growing well from the roots. There is also a lot of herbaceous diversity and beautiful flowering, which attracts life to the area.
It is common in the Mediterranean basin for species to grow after a fire that previously had no chance due to factors such as shade, for example. These seeds lay dormant in the soil awaiting disturbance, and now with full sun available, the dormant species emerge. Over time the passage will rebalance as the previous vegetation takes its place again, and these opportunists will be relegated to available niches as the new forest takes shape.
