The germination of the wild olive tree is quite complex, it has taken us several years to find the key, because if the seed is harvested when ripe (at the same time as the traditional olive harvest) it does not work. When it is ripe but somewhat green, it is viable.
This year we have been able to carry out germination tests to find out how to develop an effective method. We started with cutting the stone, you can see the different cuts that were made in the tests. In the pictures you can also see a germination without and with bone.
In a next posts will share with you a graph that shows the results at 13º, which is the optimum temperature for this variety.
With this data we will be able to devise priming and controlled germination treatments for reforestation. In the last image you can see the seed inside the bone without germinating, look at the beautiful shapes!
