As we have explained in previous publications, the acorns have passed the montanera, and at the end of August the acorns start to grow.
If, by this time, they have hardly emerged from the dome as in the first picture, these fruits have little chance of thriving, which indicates water stress and vulnerability for the tree. The usual thing in these cases is that the weevils (Curculio sp.) bite the acorns, then they will drop resin, more wasps will come, they will fall, etc.
However, those that develop well, despite being stung by the curculio, are not affected in the same proportion.
In this way, when we observe holm oaks, we can anticipate and organise the harvests, choose specimens for harvesting, etc.
The other year, for example, given the bad forecasts, we were able to anticipate and we made a call to find out where there were holm oaks from which we could harvest good acorns.
